Candeleda is a village in the far south of “Valle del Tietar” next to the Region of ” La Vera, Cáceres” , but belonging to Avila Province though. Its previlage geographical location with mild climate makes possible the production of still important quantities of red pepper to be processed in powder and even tabacco plantations. However, the day we came over there was going on a weekend open Market on Regional goat cheese
and other local products in the main village central Square. We spent quite a while tasting a variety of cheese, chewing some tabacco leaves and also tasted some red pepper powder. While we were at it some local people told us a few tricks not to forget. For instance, the darker red peper powder is the better quality. Before leaving the village local people invited us to go back to the village, but on the second week of September as best when they celebrate a Pilgrimage to the “Chilla-Virgin” Sanctuary, 7 kilometers further up the mountains. So whoever reads this we have a date and a special place to go to!!!
